This piece is a master copy of "Self Portrait with Grey Felt Hat" (1887) by Vincent Van Gogh. I deliberately chose this piece, as I knew it would present many challenges for me. This was my second ever attempt at the impasto technique, however, Van Gogh’s impasto is unlike anything I have ever tried before; he used very thin, quick, and suggestive yet deliberate strokes. Another challenge was his use of color in an impressionistic manner. I have never dabbled with impressionism before and with using colors you would not expect when painting his self-portraits; he used many greens, yellow, blues, oranges, and so on, rather than the typical skin tone colors. The last challenge was letting go and not letting my perfectionism take hold of me. This project taught me a lot when it comes to trusting the process and I ended up loving the result.
